Draupadi protected. A legend is mentioned in the Vamana Purana that when Lord Vishnu took everything from King Bali in three steps, King Bali asked Lord Vishnu for a boon.

In the boon, Bali urged Lord Vishnu to reside with him in the underworld. Lord Vishnu had to go to Hades due to a boon. This caused great trouble to Goddess Lakshmi.

One day Lakshmi ji disguised as an elderly woman and reached Hades to free Lord Vishnu from Vamana. Goddess Lakshmi made Vamana a brother and tied a Raksha sutra to Vamana’s wrist. When Vamana asked Lakshmi to ask for something, Lakshmi asked Lord Vishnu to go to Baikuntha from Patala.

In order to keep the matter of his sister, Vamana sent Lord Vishnu to Baikunth along with Goddess Lakshmi. Lord Vishnu granted Vamana a boon that during the period of Chaturmas, he would come and reside in Hades.

After this incident, Rakshabandhan became a festival for brothers and sisters. That is why King Bali has been mentioned in the mantra of Rakshabandhan.
