Sanchi Stupa

Udaygiri Caves
Udayagiri, meaning mountain of sunrise, is a historical Hindu ritual site. Vishnu Padagiri is another name for the place, which means “the feet of Vishnu.” The Hindus extensively carved them with iconographies of their Gods, namely Vishnu, Durga, and Shiva, containing legendary stories of the Gods and their Shrines. Udayagiri hills hold twenty caves dedicated to Hinduism and Jainism sculptures from the Gupta Era. Among which the most prominent one is the fifth cave which is famous for the ancient monumental statue of Lord Vishnu in his incarnation as the Boar-Headed Varaha rescuing Bhudevi (earth).
Sanchi Museum
Located initially on a hilltop near the Sanchi Stupa by Sir John Marshall in 1919, the Sanchi museum, now preserved and maintained by the ASI at the foothill of the Stupa, houses many unique and interesting Buddhist artefacts that were discovered during the clearance and excavation done at Sanchi. The museum opened to the public in 1966 when it shifted locations. 6.3 acres of land spread over it, and it comprises a main hall and 4 galleries.
The galleries and main hall contain various sculptures, carvings and artefacts from different kingdoms. Archaeologists have excavated most objects from Sanchi itself, but they have discovered some in the neighbourhood areas. The museum is open for public viewing from 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Saturday to Thursday. There is an entry fee of INR 30 for Indian nationals, and INR 250 for foreign nationals.
Ashok Pillar
The 3rd century put up this pillar, and the Greco Buddhist style influenced its structure. A remnant of Sanchi’s ancient history, this pillar still stands strong and appears newly built despite being centuries old. It also resembles the Sarnath pillar a lot.
