Shergarh Fort

The Shergarh Fort, now in ruins, is more than 3,000 years old. It is located to the south of the city, next to the Chambal River. As per historical records, this fort was first built by King Maldev in 1532. Sher Shah attacked and captured it. It had, then, been rechristened after Sher Shah Sur who restored the fort in 1540 AD to protect the Afghan kingdom from the onslaughts the Mewar in mid 16th century on the western frontier. It served as a strong and strategically located defense measure. Shergarh Fort was in use until the beginning of 20th century. Shergarh Fort has four gates but the frequently used gate was on the eastern side.

Mughal Garden

The oldest Mughal Garden of the Indian subcontinent, built in 1527 AD by Babur, is located in the small village of Jhor (about 15 km from Dholpur). Elizabeth Moynihan, the wife of the American ambassador in India at that time, discovered the historic Mughal Garden in Dholpur in 1978 AD. Using Babur’s autobiography as a guide, Elizabeth meticulously traced clues from Uzbekistan to Dholpur. The Archaeological Survey of India has put in lot of efforts to keep the remains nicely preserved. In order to flatten a hill in Dholpur, Babur instructed Ustad Shah Mohammad to carve out an octagonal foliated water tank. The diameter of the tank is 8.8 meter.

Chopra Shiva Temple

Chopra Temple is the oldest Mahadev temple in Dholpur. It is located near the Gwalior-Agra road and is a monument of great architectural beauty. Rajdhar Kanhaiya Lal, the diwan at Maharawal Bhagwant Singh’s royal court, built the temple. Its importance in region can be understood by the fact that Jagadguru Shankaracharya Swami Shri Jayendra Saraswati has also come to Chopra Mahadev Temple for worship and do ‘shringaar’ of the presiding deity Lord Shiva. During the Hindu festival of Mahashivratri, a large number of devotees come here.

Muchkund Temple

Located at a distance of about 4 kilometers from Dholpur. Machkund is named after the eminent Raja Machchh Kund, the 24th king belonging to the Suryavanshi Dynasty, who is believed to have ruled for 19 generations before Lord Ram. According to a popular belief, Raja Machchh Kund was resting over here when Kaal Yaman, a demon pursuing Lord Krishna, accidently disturbed him.

Khanpur Mahal & Talab E Shahi

Khanpur Mahal, adjacent to Talab-e-Shahi, a medieval Mughal era monument, is one of the prime attractions of Dholpur. This Mahal, an elegant pleasure palace built in 17th century, is located about 27 kms from the city of Dholpur. Prince Shah Jahan constructed the lake and palace in 1617 AD as an urge lodge. Shah Jahan, the Mughal ruler, built the Khanpur Palace, a series of pavilions. The area around Khanpur Mahal and Talab-e-Shahi served as hunting grounds. The historic man-made lake attracts a large number of migratory birds like pintails, shovelers, etc. The beautiful structures of Khanpur Mahal are the major attractions which mesmerize the visitors.
