Bon Monastery

Bon monastery in Solan is the second oldest Bon monastery in the world. The people of the Bon community highly revere the monastery. The Bon community is even older than the Buddhist community though the principles are the same. Perched on a hill top, the Bon monastery offers picturesque views of the town and snow-capped mountains.

The monastery is a grand spectacle, boasting manicured gardens and an impressive statue of Tonpa Shenrab Miwoche. Abbot Lungtog Tenpai Nyima founded the monastery in 1969. The chief of the monastery is Menri Trizin. People participate in religious ceremonies and it is also a ritual to walk in a clockwise direction around the monastery.

Christ Church

The British built Christ Church in 1857 to serve the large Anglican British community in North India, making it one of the oldest churches in the area. The majestic appearance of the church and its stunning location makes it a prime attraction in Shimla. The church has stained glass windows, which represent faith, hope, charity, fortitude, patience, and humanity. It is one of the long-lasting legacies of British rule in India and also Shimla’s most popular landmark. Anyone visiting Shimla should spend some time in the church building constructed in the Neo-Gothic style of architecture.

Shoolini Mata Temple

The Shoolini Mata Temple is dedicated to Shoolini Mata-an incarnation of Goddess Durga. The shrine is one of the prime attractions of Solan. It is also believed that the town of Solon was named after Shoolini Mata, who is the presiding deity of the temple. As per legends, the temple was once the abode of Shoolini Mata.

The shrine attracts huge crowd during festival days, especially during the Shoolini fair. The temple looks beautiful in the night when it is completely illuminated and is crowded on holidays and festivals. Other highlights of the fair are activities like dancing, singing and wrestling .The fair attracts traders, sweet sellers, general merchants and shopkeepers from the neighbouring town.

Dagshai Jail Museum

Tourists frequent the former British prison, now a museum, Dagshai jail museum.Dhagshai is one of the oldest cantonment towns in the Solan district of Himachal Pradesh. Someone used the place as a storage yard. The army helped to clean up and a well designed structure emerged. Someone converted this place into a museum later. It is the only museum in India which is the only jail museum in India apart from the Cellular Jail in the Andamans.

Kuthar Fort

At a distance of 52 km from Shimla and 33.5 km from Solan, Kuthar Fort is located in Solan district of Himachal Pradesh. Kuthar Fort is about 800 years old and it is one of the main places to visit near Solan.

The Gurkha Kings built Kuthar Fort 800 years ago when they ruled over this part of the land. Some portions of the fort are 80 years old. Sprawling over an expanse of 52.8 sq km, this fort features beautiful gardens, fresh-water springs and ancient temples within the complex. Fresh water springs flowing within the fort are a rare sight that every visitor admires. You can also visit several scenic attractions like Kunihar, the Gurkha fort of Subathu and the hill station of Kasauli.
