Reckong Peo

Reckong Peo also known as Peo is the headquarters of Kinnaur district. Located at a distance of 260 km from Shimla and at an altitude of 2,300 meters, this town is famous for its apples. Kinnauri people inhabit it and it has a diverse culture even in today’s modern era. Some other major attractions include stately cedars, apple orchards and deodar trees. You can see two of the greatest wonders of the Himalayas, i.e. Mount Kailash and the Shivalinga Rock, from Reckong Peo.

Reckong Peo was born on 1st May 1960 and was known as Kinnaura earlier, according to history. The Guge Kingdom of Tibet ruled the district between the 9th and 12th century. The rule divided the district into seven parts, collectively known as Sat Khund. Akbar conquered the district, and it became a part of the Mughal Empire. Chini Tehsil became known as this district after the end of the Mughal Empire.
